Giddy-up in the Great Smokies

When you think of cowboy boots, chuckwagons and
country and western music, you probably think of Texas, Montana, Arizona, etc.
And the Smoky Mountains may not be high on your list for cattle drive nostalgia.
But a trip to Pigeon Forge from February 23 – 26 for Saddle Up!
may change your notion of having to go past the Mississippi river to see real
cowboy culture.

This is the 12th annual Saddle Up!
in Pigeon Forge. It has activities and entertainment for the smallest buckaroo
to the most grizzled cowpoke. There are concerts and tales by musicians, poets
and storytellers. Maybe the Cowboy Dance or the Chuckwagon Cook-off are more
your speed. Take a workshop or attend a clinic and learn about roping, cooking
and more. There’s art exhibits and even Cowboy Church, a non-denominational service held Sunday morning.

New for 2012 is
“Stories & Strings” a concert that features artists playing their music and
discussing their influences. The cool thing is that the musicians scheduled to
perform have never played together – this could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance
to see some of the masters of cowboy cool.

Now Saddle Up!
happens all over Pigeon Forge, so be sure to check out the link to
their home page to find out what is happening where. You can buy tickets online
to expedite the process. Get back in the saddle and discover a flair for the
old west in Pigeon Forge this month!
