Ober Gatlinburg and Aerial Tramway Getting $4.5 Million Upgrades this Spring

Ober Gatlinburg is getting a major upgrade this spring! They will be temporarily closing to update several things, including the Aerial Tramway. The project is estimated to cost about $4.5 million. Learn more about Ober Gatlinburg and the Aerial Tramway upgrades below:

Aerial Tramway Updates

aerial tramway to ober gatlinburg in the winterThe Aerial Tramway will be closed March 22 to May 28, 2021 for upgrades and preventative maintenance. The original cables that were installed in 1973 will be replaced. It will also be switching to an AC drive system with a variable frequency controller. The cables have a 50-year lifespan, so they need to be replaced. While the tramway is closed, Ober Gatlinburg will offer a free shuttle ride from downtown Gatlinburg to the mountaintop where the park is located. All of the other attractions, shops, and restaurants will continue to operate while the Aerial Tramway is closed.

Ober Gatlinburg Upgrades

Ober Gatlinburg will be closed too, from April 26 through May 6, 2021 for cosmetic improvements, as well as routine maintenance and inspections. All departments will be closed during this time, and it will be completely closed to the public.

Ski, Snowboard, and Snow Tube

During the winter months, you can do all kinds of fun winter activities. Ober Gatlinburg makes its own snow with huge machines so guests can ski and snowboard down the mountain. In addition to these winter sports, you can play in the kiddie area or go snow tubing.

Wildlife Encounter

Alpine Slide

One of the most popular things to do at Ober is the alpine slide. You’ll start at the top of the mountain and ride down a concrete slide on a cart. People of all ages will have a blast controlling their cart as they race down the mountain!

Ice Skating and Bumper Cars

girl ice skatingA year-round activity people love to do is ice skate. The rink is indoors, and people of all ages enjoy ice skating. There are also ice bumper cars on the ice rink, so you can knock into each other!
