Hang Out with Stars on September 28

Giant red moon rise over dark northern forestAlthough the leaves begin to change in the fall season, that’s not the only thing that brings people to the Smokies. Brightly shining stars glow through the clear skies on cool autumn days, making the Great Smoky Mountains National Park a wonderful place for stargazing.

On Saturday, September 28 at 8p.m., make sure you have plans to experience the Smoky Mountain stars as they light up the night sky over Cades Cove. The Smoky Mountain Astronomical Society is teaming up with a park ranger to offer a fun night out for the entire family. During the program, families will learn about the stars and galaxies that can be seen from Cades Cove. There will be numerous telescopes available for use at the event, so everyone will have the chance to take an up-close look at the sparking stars.

The program will last approximately two and a half hours. There is a very short walk to the program site, approximately ¼ of a mile. To join the event, visitors can meet at the Orientation Shelter at the beginning of the Cades Cove Loop Road. From there, the park ranger will direct visitors to the event area.

Tips for Your Evening at the Stargazing Event:

  • Dress warmly, as the evening hours tend to be much cooler than the daytime hours
  • Pack a blanket to sit on during the event. If you have a large family, you may want to pack more than one blanket.
  • Remember to pack a flashlight to help guide your walk to and from the event area.
