Polka, Pretzels and Pints (of Beer) At Oktoberfest in Gatlinburg

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Fortunately, you don’t need to speak German to take part in this year’s Oktoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg!  This beloved event takes place every October and celebrates some of the time honored traditions of the original Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. There are plenty of activities and lots of fun to be had by visitors of all ages.

What is Oktoberfest?

The original Oktoberfest in Germany began in the famous Heidelberg Castle and its attached restaurant. Locals came to gather for great German music, food, and entertainment. When the wedding of Princess Therese of Bavaria and Crown Prince Ludwig I took place back in 1810, the entire town celebrated with a horse race, beer, and dancing.

Similar to the wedding of the prince, you can come and enjoy German-inspired music and dancing performed by the Bavarian Fun Makers Band, who showcase authentic Bavarian attire. The shows are hugely entertaining and invite you to join in with sing-a-longs, yodels, and lively oompah music.

Authentic German Food

One of the highlights of Oktoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg is the food. Most of the food is German inspired and derived from recipes and cuisine found at traditional Bavarian festivals. Beer is often the highlight of most Oktoberfest festivals. You will be able to sample a variety of German beers, and a beer tent will be available for festival-goers who are 21 and over. A great accompaniment to beer is the specialized German cuisine, including schnitzel, bratwurst, strudel, pretzels, and sauerkraut. There are a variety of vendors on hand that will offer salads, appetizers, and entrees for guests to enjoy.

The Smoky Mountains are the ideal setting for this once-a-year German festival. With changing leaves and cooler temperatures, it is the perfect time to visit the area for a vacation.
