Titanic Movie Costumes on Display in Pigeon Forge This Summer
One of the most popular movies of all time is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year! Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the 1997 film Titanic won 11 Academy Awards and grossed over $2.1 billion.
To mark the film’s two-decade anniversary, the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge is celebrating with a special exhibit. From June 17, 2017 through Labor Day, the original Titanic movie costumes will be on display at the museum. Highlights of the collection include Rose’s iconic red “Jump Dress” and a life jacket autographed by Kate Winslet. To help you plan your next vacation, Visit My Smokies has put together a guide to everything you need to know about seeing the movie costumes at the Titanic Museum.
About the Titanic Movie Costumes
Creating all of the costumes for Titanic was no small feat! Lead costume designer Deborah Lynn Scott and a team of around 50 people spent an entire year before the start of production bringing Edwardian fashion back to life. Scott used original patterns from the era and recreated a number of actual gowns from the period.
The attention to detail in the film is incredible. Every actor who appears in the movie, including extras who are just in the background, were completely decked out in authentic 1912 costumes. Even items like corsets, stockings, garters, and underwear were faithfully recreated.
All of the costume department’s hard work paid off, as the film won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. For a behind the scenes look at the making of the Titanic movie costumes, watch the short video below:
About the Titanic Museum Attraction
In addition to the movie costumes, the Titanic Museum Attraction offers over 20 fascinating exhibits to explore. Visitors to the museum will have the chance to see more than 400 artifacts that were on the actual RMS Titanic. These items were either recovered from the ocean or carried off the ship by survivors. The museum’s collection is valued at $4 million!
Much like watching the Titanic movie, the Titanic Museum Attraction is an immersive experience that lets guests feel what it was like to be on the famous ship in 1912. When you visit the museum, you’ll be given a “boarding pass” with a short biography of an actual passenger on the Titanic. At the end of your tour, you’ll visit the Memorial Room where you can find out the fate of your passenger.
While the outside of the Titanic Museum is a half-scale recreation of the ship, the inside of the museum features full-scale recreations of rooms from the ocean liner. The architect of the museum used the Titanic’s original blueprints to ensure historical accuracy. The most popular section of the museum is the grand staircase, which is just as breathtaking in person as it looks in the film!
