Save Money in the Smoky Mountains

Vacations cost money, right? That’s always one of the discussion points before you head away from home – how much, what if we stay here instead, eating out versus cooking at the cabin, etc. Well, if you’d like to save money while on vacation in the Smoky Mountains (stay with me here), come to Sevier County the first weekend of August.

Tennessee’s Sales Tax Holiday is
August 3 – 5. The state designates the first weekend of August each year to be
tax-free on certain items, to encourage spending and help businesses. So what
is included? Clothing with a price of $100 or less per item, school and school
art supplies with a price of $100 or less per item, and computers with a price
of $1,500 or less. These items are exempt from state and local tax during this event. This also applies to items sold online and
over the phone if the customer pays immediately, regardless of delivery time.
It is estimated Tennesseans save between $8 and $10 million each year on this
weekend.

So you’re thinking, “I’m from another state, this
really doesn’t make a difference to me.” Except it does – if you have children,
you know you’re going to have to buy school supplies and back-to-school
clothes. And Sevier County has got so many choices when it comes to shopping,
including outlet stores, where the prices are already reduced from the parent
stores. So you can get Junior a computer, some cool jeans and shirts and
notebooks, save money and help the economy of a great vacation destination.
