4 Caves Near Gatlinburg and Sevierville You Need to Know About
Did you know Tennessee has the largest concentration of caves in the whole United States? The Smoky Mountains are filled with unique caves! Many of these natural wonders are located in some of the most beautiful areas of the Smoky Mountains. Some of these caves are closed to the public while others can be toured with a guide. Here are 4 caves near Gatlinburg and Sevierville you need to know about:
1. Gregory’s Cave
There are many hidden gems in the Smoky Mountains including caves! One of the most amazing caves near Gatlinburg is Gregory’s Cave. Located in Cades Cove, Gregory’s Cave is the largest cave in the area. The cave’s entrance is rather large measuring 10 feet wide and 4 feet tall. It was first opened to the public in 1925 but is now closed to the public by the National Park Service. Although it is closed, you can still see the entrance of the cave. There is a great viewing area where you can see into the mouth of the cave near the John Oliver Cabin. Be sure to add this spot to your list of things to do in Cades Cove.
2. Tuckaleechee Caverns
If you drive past Cades Cove and into Townsend, you will find another fantastic cave called Tuckaleechee Caverns. It definitely makes our list of caves near Gatlinburg you need to know about! This attraction is known as the “Greatest Site Under the Smokies” and is also available to tour. Inside the cave see high waterfalls, unique formations, and more! This attraction is open to the public from mid March to mid November. The hours of operation are from 10 AM to around 5 PM and they are open 7 days a week. Expect to pay $22 for adults, and $10 for kids ages 5 to 11. Children under 5 years old are free for this attraction!
3. Alum Cave
Although not technically a cave, Alum Cave is another great spot to visit! Located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Alum Cave is one of the best spots to check out if you like hiking. To get to the site take Alum Cave Trail. You know you are there when you see the large concave bluff. The large bluff at Alum Cave measures 500 feet wide and 80 feet high! You are sure to be impressed with this natural curiosity!
4. Forbidden Caverns
One of the most popular caves near Gatlinburg is Forbidden Caverns. Located in Sevierville, Tennessee, Forbidden Caverns is an attraction that the whole family will love! Once there, you will embark on an underground tour of the caverns. During the 1 hour guided tour, you will see many towering formations and learn about the resources inside the cave that were used by Native Americans. Touring the cave will cost $20 for adults and $12 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 are free. The attraction operates on a seasonal basis so plan accordingly.
