Spring Rod Run Smoky Mountains TN 2013

Classic car taxi in ManhattanThe Grand Spring Rod Run returns to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee April 19-21 of 2013. This is one of the largest collector car events in the country and is not to be missed. This run features every kind of collector car imaginable, including street machines, classics, buckets, roadsters, fat fenders, chrome and paint galore.

There are impromptu car shows in parking lots everywhere with friends and fans hanging out and talking cars. People admire each other’s cars and proudly show off their own, before motoring down the Pigeon Forge Parkway to the next meeting. Large show and drive events like this are a great place to find that next driver project or trophy winner.

Thousands of cars from all over the country make the trip out to Tennessee for the spring car season. Lots of parts and accessory vendors also attend, and cruising main and the surrounding highways is a visual feast with all the old iron on display. The Pigeon Forge Parkway turns into a colorful exhibit of the automotive art, with vehicles of every description jammed into all available space. This is a sensory smorgasbord of color, sound, smell and touch.

The cars will start invading the area at the beginning of the week for the Spring Rod Run, and the mob will grow until saturation level is reached and there are mag wheels everywhere you look. The vendors begin setting up and everything a person could want for their car is on hand, as well as a lot of great food and barbecue. By the weekend it’s going full blast and you will be swept away.

Red Roof Mall, right on the main drag, partners with the Marines to raise Toys for Tots funding. They do this by selling prime display space in the mall parking. If you are bringing a car to the event, this is a great way to have a reserved space waiting for you. Bonuses to this approach include a lot of other cars right next to you that are easily viewed at leisure, and a righteous contribution to charity.

Night time is the right time for viewing the cruise action. The lights reflecting off the steel and chrome create a feast for the senses that will never be forgotten. Occasionally you will see one of the gems that you admired earlier in the day pounding ground, with the driver returning your friendly wave. The general sense of camaraderie among the gearhead faithful is inspiring and refreshing. It’s like time traveling into the past, with representative examples from every decade of automobile manufacturing.

The Grand Resort Convention Center serves as home base for the event, with MCS Promotions being the central point of contact. MCS has been promoting the event since 1991, but the rod run itself goes back to the late 1960s.
