Smoky Mountains Chosen To Host 2014 Winter Olympics
Returning to Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort for another fun and exciting year, a total of 140 athletes will race for gold later this month at the 2014 Special Olympics Tennessee Winter Games. Competing in Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding and Speed Ice Skating, athletes will be divided based on age and ability.
Dates and Admission
This year’s Special Olympics at Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort will be held January Monday 27- Tuesday 28. The opening ceremonies and traditional lighting of the Special Olympic flame will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, and the awards ceremony will commence at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Staff at Ober and Special Olympics Tennessee proudly welcome guests to join them in cheering on the athletes at the Gatlinburg event. Although the slopes and skating rink will be closed from public use, guests can still enjoy a beautiful day at the Tennessee ski resort. Admission for spectators is free.
History of the Special Olympics Tennessee
The Special Olympics hosts more than 2.5 million athletes, all with intellectual disabilities. The Tennessee chapter of the Special Olympics offers a total of 17 different sports including track, bowling, soccer, and basketball. All events are free to participate in, and are funded by donations and volunteers.
About Ober Gatlinburg
In 2013 Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort celebrated their 50th anniversary. Along with the outdoor ski/snowboarding slopes and skating rink, the ski resort also offers guests a delicious restaurant, wildlife exhibit, and an outdoor snow tubing course. Guests can visit the park by traveling one of two ways. The first is riding the Aerial Tramway from downtown Gatlinburg, and the second is parking at the resort at 1339 Ski Mountain Road.
