The History of Cumberland Jack

As is common with many restaurants in the Smokies, Cumberland Jack’s has a fantastic history to go along with incredible food. The name of the restaurant commemorates the memory of Cumberland Jack, who was the sidekick, companion, and friend of Paul Adams back in the 1920s. Adams is known as the first person and caretaker to build a shelter on the top of Mount LeConte back in 1925. During the quest to build the shelter and maintain the camp, Adams discovered it would be a challenge to climb up and down the mountain to get the supplies he needed. That is where trustworthy Cumberland Jack came into play. Adams would send his dog to the Ogle Store in Gatlinburg with a grocery list and money in his saddle bags to retrieve the things that were needed at the camp. In just a few hours, Cumberland Jack would return to the top of the mountain with all the items that Adams needed!

How the Two Joined Forces

Cumberland Jack began his public service as a detective dog in Knoxville. He was sent to New Jersey for training and during his trek back to Tennessee the news broke that his handler was shot and killed in the line of duty. The family of the detective was forced to put the dog up for sale for an asking price of $500. However, no one was able to afford the price and Adams finally purchased Cumberland Jack for half price at $250. The money was accepted by the family of the fallen detective, and they were glad to know that the German Shepherd would be needed on top of the mountain to help others.
