A Homecoming for Chris Blue
Although he is originally from Florida, Chris Blue has deep roots in the Smoky Mountain area. When he was 10 years old, Chris’s family moved to Knoxville, TN, which is about 40 minutes away from Pigeon Forge. Chris grew up singing and preaching in church, and he eventually became a worship leader at the Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Knoxville.
Blue is excited to perform at the Smoky Mountain Opry this holiday season because he was already a fan of their Christmas show. In a press release, Blue explained, “My brother, Julius, played keyboard at the Smoky Mountain Opry Theater and we came to watch him and I never thought I would have the opportunity to sing here one day in this magnificent theater and now that day has come.”
Christmas is an especially meaningful time of year for Blue, who has fond memories of playing outside with his cousins at his grandmother’s house around the holidays. Chris grew up poor and didn’t receive his first Christmas gift until he was 7 years old, but he didn’t feel like he was missing out. Blue believes that God gave him “the best Christmas gift of all”: his musical talent. “My voice is a gift from God. I have a gift I did not ask for. I didn’t deserve it but God gave it to me and I am here to serve people for a much bigger calling than the gift itself. This opportunity is about the people I have to serve.”
Millions of Americans first heard Chris’s God-given talent, when he auditioned for season 12 of The Voice, the popular singing competition on NBC. Blue was the last competitor to perform in the Blind Auditions, and he was chosen by Alicia Keys for her team. Chris would go on to win the entire competition, taking home a $100,000 prize and a recording deal.
