Getting Cheesy in the Smokies

Admittedly, cheesecake is probably not the first thing you think of when you think of food in the Smoky Mountains. But after trying the selections at the Smoky Mountain Cheesecake Café, it will certainly be on the top of your list when it comes to desserts on your vacation.

This unassuming, yellow building on Highway 66 is
home to some delicious choices not only for dessert, but for entrees as well.
They’ve got burgers, grilled chicken, hot dogs and sandwiches. Word on the
street is that the Reuben, and especially the Cuban, are some of the best sandwiches
in the area. Their bread and buns are handmade and baked fresh daily. They have
also recently added breakfast hours, with a menu including Cuban coffee,
breakfast sandwiches and bagels.

But cheesecake is what we’re after. They’ve got
traditional kinds, like plain with fruit topping, Key Lime and lemon chiffon,
but their specialty cakes are amazing. Butterscotch, coconut Almond Joy,
Spanish Guava, Heath Bar, pumpkin, Oreo and Dickie’s Spanish Pinenut are just
some of the different varieties (I have no idea what some of these taste like,
but hey, that will give me an excuse to keep going back). They have several
there every day, but check with them to see what’s available. If you give them
24 hours notice, they can make you a whole cheesecake in any of the
flavors.

Those of us with a sweet tooth are always looking
for something new and exciting to expand our culinary experiences. Smoky
Mountain Cheesecake Café certainly seems to be upping the ante when it comes to
great tasting desserts.
