Behind-the-Scenes Look: Doc Collier Moonshine Distillery in Gatlinburg

How much do you know about the Doc Collier Gatlinburg moonshine distillery? At Visit My Smokies, we stopped in at Doc Collier’s moonshine distillery, to learn a little more about the distilling process and how the moonshine is made.

We caught up with Buddy, General Manager at Doc Collier Moonshine, and a distiller at Doc Collier, Ronny. They were able to tell us all about moonshine and how Doc Collier Moonshine got its name. Over 100 years ago, William ‘Doc’ Collier actually spent his time making moonshine in the Gatlinburg, Smoky Mountain area. It is said that Doc Collier actually made moonshine before it was even popular, even before moonshine was a word!

Today, Doc Collier Moonshine distillery in Gatlinburg brings the history of moonshine in the Smoky Mountains to life. The shop brings an old fashioned feel to the Smokies, making it different than other moonshine shops in Gatlinburg.

As you can see from our video, moonshine tastings are different than a traditional wine tasting. If you have never done a moonshine tasting, Doc Collier Moonshine is a great place to start! They will walk you through the process and explain the differences between their moonshine and others in the area.

Right now, Doc Collier Moonshine only has a single whiskey, their classic corn whiskey. The classic corn whiskey is what would have been made over 100 years ago. Today, they have apple pie, peach and blackberry flavorings that make the moonshine experience even more smooth and enjoyable.

Doc Collier Moonshine says they will be introducing more moonshine options in the near future, including the ever popular moonshine cherries! So, make sure to stop in for a free tasting, and then take home a jar of moonshine with others!

Ole Smoky Moonshine

Located in ‘The Holler’ in Gatlinburg, Ole Smoky Moonshine was one of the first to arrive in the Smoky Mountains. They have a huge selection of moonshine flavors, as well as a retail area. It’s a great place to stop in, try some ‘shine and do a little shopping!

Located in the Sugarlands of the Great Smoky Mountains, this Sugarlands Distilling Company in Gatlinburg is fairly new to the area. They have great distillers who are knowledgeable of the process, and they are completely covered in the history of moonshine and the Great Smoky Mountains. Old Forge Distillery

The Old Forge Distillery is a new addition to the Smokies! It is actually located in Pigeon Forge, so it’s a great stop for anyone who doesn’t want to make their way into Gatlinburg. Located in the area around The Old Mill, this distillery uses freshly ground grain from the mill to make their moonshine!
