Forbidden Caverns

One of the most popular attractions in Sevier County, the Forbidden Caverns are large underground caves that stretch a half-mile right into the English Mountain.

Visitors can take a guided, walking tour through the caves and view different formations (including onyx, stalactites and stalagmites), streams and grottos. Tours are about one-hour long and include special lighting and sound effects.

Forbidden Caverns in Tennessee is truly a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else. The caves draw thousands of visitors each year not just for its natural beauty but also because of its rich history. The caves were home to the Eastern Woodland Indians hundreds of years ago as shelter from the harsh winters. It also was a source of water, and materials found in the caves were used to make knives and arrowheads. The caves also were used in the 20th century to make moonshine because its isolate location and water supply. The caves have been operating as an attraction since the 1960s.
